According to Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, the place of nursing in the health care system is getting more and more complex. Nursing roles are expanding in leaps and bounds and we are taking on more responsibilities that require critical thinking skills. The nurse is expected to maintain professional competence in an environment of numerous challenges, rapid organizational changes, information technology, increasing public expectations and demand for quality and greater accountability. They are expected to be adaptive, flexible, innovative, resourceful, responsible and self-reliant. These expectations are only achievable through continuing professional development programmes which encourage nurses to apply learning directly to their field of practice.
In light of these, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria initiated Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme for Nurses across the Nation. This is aimed at assisting nurses in the continued acquisition of new knowledge, extension of professional responsibilities, expansion of personal skills and the improvement of problem solving approaches in professional practice.
